Just arrived in Sweden? Or looking to get prepared for your new life here? A good place to start is to make sure your smartphone is packed full of useful apps to help makes things a bit smoother. Here are 17 apps that can help you either get around easier, save money or are essential for daily life.

1. Swish

Swish allows you to easily send and receive money from other people using your phone number. It’s widely used in Sweden as an alternative to cash or bank transfers. If you’re splitting tabs with friends, for example, there’s a good chance you’ll be asked to ‘swish’ some money.

2. SL

The SL app is your one-stop shop for all public transportation in Stockholm. You can plan your route, buy tickets, and even see real-time updates on your bus or train. Similar apps exist for most major towns and cities, such as Västtrafik for Gothenburg and Skånetrafiken for the Skåne region.

3. 7-Eleven

A global classic. The 7-Eleven app lets you order items from your local 7-Eleven store and deliver them to your door. It’s also filled with discounts, special offers and stamp cards to help you get free coffees, salads and ice creams.

4. ICA

One of the biggest supermarkets in Sweden. Simply select your items and choose a pickup or delivery time that is convenient for you. The app also gives you unique offers and the ability to create shopping lists, plus you can browse thousands of recipes and add the needed ingredients directly to your shopping cart.

5. Apotea

One of the many online pharmacies in Sweden. Apotea is an excellent place to purchase medicine and order any prescriptions that you may have. Unfortunately, none of the online pharmacies are available in English, but you should be able to get by with google translate.

6. Dagens Nyheter

This app gives you access to one of Sweden's most popular newspapers. It’s a great way to stay up-to-date with the latest news and events in the country.

7. PostNord

The PostNord app tracks your mail and packages in real-time. It is handy if you are expecting a delivery and want to know exactly when it will arrive. You can also use the app to show a barcode when picking up parcels from your local postal office.

8. SLQ

This app is a must-have for anyone in Sweden who loves reading. It allows you to borrow e-books and audiobooks from the Stockholm City Library free of charge.

9. BankID

This app is used by many banks and government agencies in Sweden as a secure way to log in and access online services. It is a convenient way to handle important tasks such as paying bills or filing taxes. You won’t last long in Sweden without this one, as it’s sometimes the only way to verify your identity.

10. Mecenat

If you’re a student in Sweden, this app is an excellent resource for finding discounts and special offers. Simply show your Mecenat card (which you can access through the app) at participating businesses to receive discounts on everything from food, books, entertainment and more.

11. Systembolaget

As you may know, the Swedish government has a monopoly on alcohol over 3.5% Vol, meaning you can only buy directly from Systembolaget stores or the app. The Systembolaget app is helpful for anyone who wants to purchase alcohol with home delivery or order a specific product for pickup at their local store.

12. Tele2/Telia

Get the corresponding app for whichever phone company you choose. They allow you to easily manage your mobile phone plan, pay bills, add extra data and more.

13. City Bikes

Want to see Stockholm on two wheels? City Bikes makes it easy to unlock and use the state-owned bikes you’ll see everywhere.

14. TV4 Play/SVT Play

A two-in-one. Both of these apps allow you to watch Scandinavian TV shows and movies, including famous programs like "Bonusfamiljen" "Skam" "The Bridge" and "The Great Swedish Adventure."

15. Google Maps

An obvious one, but it is essential for anyone living in Sweden, as it allows you to navigate, plan trips and explore the country without worrying about getting lost.

16. Google Translate

If you don’t know Swedish, Google Translate will help you quickly get to grips with signposts and double-check words that you’re unsure of.

17. Duolingo

Sweden is the only country in the world where the native language is the most downloaded. This anomaly occurs because many Swedish people will just switch to English if they hear you struggling. Duolingo is a great asset to help you build your vocabulary and gain confidence in speaking.

So there you have it. These are just a few apps that can make life easier in Sweden. Whether you are looking for a way to stay connected, save money, or simply make your daily tasks more convenient, there is likely an app that can help.
